My child is suffering from ADHD. I live in India. Could you please tell me some treatment options?
Yes, there are lots of methods for the treatment of ADHD in India. The treatment of these children usually involves both medication and therapy. The options you have are as below:
Medication for ADHD
ADHD medicines are available in short-acting (immediate-release), intermediate-acting, and long-acting forms. It may take some time for a physician to find the best medication, dosage, and schedule for an individual with ADHD. ADHD drugs sometimes have side effects, but these tend to happen early in treatment. Usually, side effects are mild and short-lived (Read: Types and treatment for ADHD in children)

Behavioural Treatments for Children With ADHD
Behavioural treatment for children with ADHD involves adjusting the environment to promote more successful social interactions. Such adjustments include creating more structure, encouraging routines, and clearly stating expectations of the child with ADHD. (Read: Understanding ADHD: Dr Leena Deshpande)
Other forms of ADHD treatment include:
- Social skills training - This can help a child with ADHD learn behaviours that will help them develop and maintain social relationships.
- Support groups and parenting skills training - Education and support for the parents can be an integral part of treating ADHD in children.
A combination of treatments may prove to be far more effective than just type of treatment.
What is ADHD?
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder that appears in early childhood. It makes it difficult for individuals to restrain their spontaneous responses—responses that can involve everything from movement to speech to attentiveness.
The signs and symptoms of ADD/ADHD typically appear before the age of seven. However, it can be difficult to distinguish between attention deficit disorder and normal ‘kid behaviour.’ If the signs and the symptoms appear only in some situations, it’s probably not ADD/ADHD.
